The Kent County Elementary Intensive Learning Center is a county-wide special education program for students in grades K-5. Students at KEILC receive curriculum based instruction, individualized instruction and interventions, additional emotional, social and behavioral supports needed to become successful students.
We believe that:
-Behavior is learned and therefore can be unlearned
-Students need pro-social, replacement skills
The Kent Elementary Intensive Learning Center’s mission is to provide students with the necessary social/emotional coping skills and behavioral management techniques to become successful in the mainstream education environment. The Kent Elementary Intensive Learning Center’s philosophy is governed by the belief in the educability of all students, the right of every student to a free and quality education, and that education is the key to opportunity and social mobility.

How we teach social, emotional, & behavior skills @ KEILC
Social Skills- each skill is broken into steps
Cost Response- point penalty with the opportunity to earn points back immediately
Planned Teaching- Introduce skill, describe appropriate behavior, give reason, practice, feedback
Effective Praise- Show approval, describe behavior, give reason, positive consequence
Corrective Teaching- empathy statement, describe inappropriate behavior, negative consequence, describe appropriate behavior, give reason, practice, feedback, general praise
De-Escalation- Corrective strategies (Empathy, specific praise, cool-down time, coupling statements, reality statements), Moderate consequence, referral warning
Coupling Statements- Describe behavior, provide intervention, provide socially acceptable behavior
Reality Statements- State what they should do, state the positive outcome
